Castor Oil: The Cure All

A mother gives a dose of preventive medicine to her unenthusiastic children.

Those on the Oregon Trail often had an unreliable food supply which lacked enough substance for a healthy diet. Due to this deficiency, many children suffered nutritional problems. A diet consisting mainly beans, dried meat, dried fruit and berries, hardtack and bread with little water resulted in the need for "Mom's cure all". Castor oil was a staple in the wagons' medicine chests and the forerunner of today's multi-vitamin.
