Vision Fulfilled

Native Americans on the North Fork of the Malheur River near Juntura.

Quiet concern is reflected in this Paiute's eyes as his vision is fulfilled. He is informed by the runner of the arrival of white strangers to the salmon-rich summer grounds on the North Fork of the Malheur River. The Paiute were peaceful people who lived a humble life and survived by fishing and gathering roots, berries and available wildlife. Their temporary homes, or wickiups, were made of brush and reeds. A prominent landmark, Castle Rock, stands as a sentinel; in the background.
