The Branding

Branding in the Willow Corral, the cattle drive and the chuck wagon.

The first cattle for domestic production appeared in the area in the 1830's when missionaries left sore footed cattle at Fort Boise. Beginning in 1843, great numbers of cattle were driven over the Oregon Trail. Enterprising men realized that the crowds of humanity rushing to the gold fields require large amounts of provisions. Soon pack trains and freight wagons were accompanied by droves of livestock. With such large numbers, it became necessary to identify ownership of cattle on the open range though the use of brands. The use of a hot iron to burn a mark into cattle hides has actually been used for thousands of years. All brands displayed belong to the local ranchers who donated to the completion of the mural.
