Beginners Luck

A young man teaches four young ladies how to fish.

In 1995 Vale Elementary students donated to the "Pennies for Paint" Project. Unlike the fishing portrayed, which is partly beginners luck, this undertaking to raise money for the murals shows the same determination as that displayed by the immigrants who traveled the Oregon Trail. The "Pennies for Paint" Project was spearheaded by a group of Talented and Gifted Students (TAG) under the leadership of Carol Tolman. Kyle Barton, Niki Winters, Michelle Saunders, Kacie Recla and Keely Koda, who are portrayed in this mural, gave up their recesses to count and roil the coins. They charted their progress on a large pink paper pig with a goal of $100. When this goal was quickly exceeded, piglets were added which resulted in $1000 in donation. They accomplished all of this in less than a month. The endeavor to raise money for the murals was a lengthy journey that took determination and hard work.
