Walking the Planks

Crossing the Malheur River on the swinging bridge to the Natatorium.

In 1897 and 1898, wells were dug by J.N. Fell to make use of the natural hot water. On this site, two buildings were constructed which eventually became the Natatorium and Sanitarium. One of the benefits of the wells was the instant availability of extremely hot water for multiple uses such as laundry, baths, swimming, and even for scalding pigs. The water was so hot it was kept in vats to cool before use. The swinging footbridge was the preferred route for the Vale residents to cross the Malheur River to the "Nat". The naturally hot water has been used to heat homes and is still being used to this day to heat the swimming pool.
