Waiting for Sagebrush Annie

Steam engine ‘Sagebrush Annie’ arrives at the train Vale train depot

Running on a short line between Vale and Ontario, Sagebrush Annie was recognized by her shrill whistle as she rumbled through the sagebrush. The trip took 90 minutes with stops at Malheur Junction and White Settlement. Annie carried passengers as well as sheep and bales of wool from the large ranches in the area. In 1910, the track was extended north to Brogan to carry fruit from the orchards and packing houses, and track was further expanded west to Burns before it was discontinued in the 1960's. The depot stood at the north end of East Main Street in Vale until it was mysteriously demolished one night. Pictures of the train and depot can be seen in the Stone House Museum on East Main Street.
