The Crossing

Early immigrants crossing the treacherous Snake River near Old Fort Boise.

River crossings on the Oregon Trail were frequent and often perilous. The ease or difficulty depended on the season, water current, condition of the wagons and livestock, and the weariness of the travelers. Crossing the Snake River South of present day Nyssa, Oregon, at Old Fort Boise, the pioneers forged the treacherous Snake River. Before some pioneers crossed, they gathered for prayer.
