Vale's first school built in 1887.

The first school district in Malheur County was formed in Vale in 1887. It was comprised of a one room school located in the area south of what is currently the Middle School. The duties of the teachers were all encompassing and included students of all ages. In 1906, a two room school was constructed of native sandstone and a four-room addition was added in 1908. By 1910, the little one room school with one teacher, had grown to include a high school with six teachers.
