Journaling

A mother reads to a child and a man writes in a journal while camped on the banks of the Malheur River.

Most of what is known about the circumstances of the Oregon Trail comes from diaries, journals, and reminiscences. Schooling was generally suspended during the journey. After walking an average of ten to fifteen miles each day for almost six months they had limited time and energy, and yet, many set aside time for reading and journaling.
