Death on the Oregon Trail

A family grieves the loss of their daughter at a site northwest of Vale.

The Oregon Trail has been called "a long continuous cemetery.” One person out of every ten who traveled the Trail died on the journey west mostly from disease or accidents. Cholera epidemics were common and killed many thousands of emigrants and Native Americans alike. The lonesome grave of Gertrude Wentworth, a six year old girl who died in 1874, can still be seen between the Vale crossing and Alkali Springs on Lower Willow Creek.
